The SP government has decided to change the name of Manyavar Sri Kanshiram Ji Urdu Arabi-Farsi University, which was up set up by former chief minister Mayawati in 2009 but is yet to begin its first academic session.

In a letter to Vice-Chancellor of the university,Anees Ansari,Chief Secretary Jawed Usmani had sought suggestions from him about the names of literary luminaries which could replace the name of Kanshiram, the BSP founder.

In the past SP leaders, particularly Azam Khan, had questioned the logic of Mayawati for naming the Urdu-Farsi university after Kanshiram asking what was BSP leader’s contribution to Urdu,Arabic and Persian language.

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is reportedly keen to change the name of the institution and had instructed Usmani to seek suggestions from the V-C,whom he had met in April.

The university administration has send a list of nine names to replace kanshiram. The list includes legendary persian poet Amir Khusro, famous saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti,Urdu poet Allama Iqbal, freedom fighter and Congress leader Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, legendary urdu poet Mirza Ghalib, educationist and freedom fighter Shibli Nomani,Sant Kabir, persian scholar Habeeb-ur-Rehman Azmi and eminent literary figure Abdul Majid Daryabadi.

The government is likely to take the decision soon.

During his meeting with CM,and chief secretary in April,Ansar had urged the government to release the remaining sanctioned amount of Rs 107 crore so that the construction work of the university is completed and the academic session could be launched.

Former Chief Minister Mayawati had announced the setting up an Urdu-Faris institution on February 28,2009 to project it as an step towards Muslim welfare. Later, the institution was included in the list of state universities on March 5,2010. Finally,it was named in memory of BSP founder Manyavar Kanshiram on April 4 2011.

A land of 30 acres was allotted to the university at IIM road and the government released the first instalment of Rs 171 crores for construction work. However, the university could not be completed during Mayawati’s tenure and with the SP coming to power in the state, the funding for the university completely halted.

Since the university is yet to start its academic session,Ansari has also requested the state government to issue notification for appointment of 111 posts of teaching faculties and 108 non-teaching posts. He also has urged for acquisition of another 36 acres for the expansion of the university campus. Besides these languages,a proposal for starting BCA,MBA,mass communication, journalism and other vocational courses is also pending with the state government.
