At least four Congressmen were arrested when they protested before Basic Education Minister Ram Govind Chaudhary,who is the minister in-charge of Jaunpur,in the district collectorate premises of Jaunpur on Thursday.
Paras Nath Yadav,another minister,accompanied Chaudhary,who had come to attend a meeting on the district plan.
Six policemen,including a sub-inspector,were sent to district lines for not taking timely preventive action to stop the protesters. Four of them,including the S-I,were posted in Mianpur police post,close to the collectorate,and two were deployed in escort duty.
The police said the arrested Congressmen were Khurshid Anwar Khan,a representative of Congress MLA Nadeem Javed from Jaunpur (Sadar),former president of National Students Union of India Satyaveer Singh,Usman Ali and Naseem Ahmed.
They have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to rioting,obstructing public servant in discharge of duty,wrongful confinement and assault on public servant to prevent him from discharging duty, said Station Officer of Line Bazar K K Mishra. More than a dozen Congress workers were also detained under preventive custody for a few hours.
The policemen sent to district lines are Sub-Inspector Santosh Singh,in charge of Mianpur police post,and constables Virendra,Jai Ram and Shyam Narayan, said Mishra.
SP (City) Sripati Mishra said: The Congressmen violated the law by holding a protest and preventing the ministers vehicle from leaving the premises for a long time. They also misbehaved with supporters of the other political party.
The Congressmen alleged that Sadar Assembly constituency was being neglected in the district plan.
