A year after Louise Khurshid, wife of Union External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, lost badly in the UP Assembly elections, district congress leaders in Farrukhabad blamed it on a public meeting of party vice-president Rahul Gandhi organised on a Friday ahead of the 2012 elections.
The issue came up at a meeting of Farrukhabad district Congress called by AICC general secretary Madhusudan Mistry in Bareilly on Tuesday.
Mistry began the second phase of his state tour from Bareilly on Tuesday. After inaugurating the zonal office there,he held districtwise meetings of Farrukhabad,Hardoi,Lakhimpur,Sitapur and Shahjahanpur.
In each of these meetings,Mistry asked party workers to expose the communal agenda of the BJP,unfulfilled promises of the SP and the caste politics of the BSP.
Senior party leaders, including Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Jitin Prasada,Congress state president Nirmal Khatri,Congress Legislature Party leader Pradeep Mathur as well as Louise Khurshid, were present in the zonal meeting. Khurshid had finished fifth from Farrukhabad in the 2012 assembly elections.
According to sources, the issue of partys poor performance during the Assembly elections was discussed during the meeting of Farrukhabad. Citing the example of Khurshids loss, local leaders said that for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, public meetings of Rahul or Sonia Gandhi should not be organised on Fridays as locals have to perform namaz (prayers) in the region.
The cadre was blamed for a poor turnout during Rahuls meeting before the elections and for poor performance of the candidate in Farrukhabad. But we clarified that the fault lied with the day and timing of the meeting. It was held at 11am on Friday right before Jumme ki namaz was to be held, said district Congress leader from Farrukhabad.
On Wednesday,Mistry would hold meetings of Badaun and Pilibhit districts.
