Five persons were injured, two of them critically,in a clash between two groups arguing over the covering of a drain in Sultanpur village in Noida Sector 128 on Sunday morning.

The injured have been identified as Ravidutt,Ravinder,Jairam,Hari Om and Geeta, police said. While three of them are recuperating at the district hospital,Hari Om and Ravinder are critical and have been referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.

Senior police officers said the clash broke out between the families of Jairam Tyagi and Subey Tyagi, reportedly a local Samajwadi Party leader, over the covering of a drain in the area. The two groups attacked each other with sticks, stones and also fired about 15 rounds, police said.

“Jairam wanted to lay a concrete slab on top of the drain to stop it from overflowing. However,Subey Tyagi,Jairam’s neighbour, disagreed with the idea. The two families have been arguing over this issue over several weeks,” a police officer said.

A resident of the village,Jitender Singh said,“Jairam and his family wanted to put a concrete slab over the drain outside their house. But the cover overlapped into Subey Tyagi’s plot. Subey had flower pots and other items in his courtyard, which would have had to be removed because of the cover. There had been arguments over this even four days ago,but this was the first time it got so violent.”

Officers said in the clash on Sunday, which began around 9 am. “Those identified in the fight on Sunday include Jairam, his brothers — Jaikumar,Ravidutt,Ravinder and Hari Om. The other group included Subey Tyagi,Balbeer,Yogesh,Devkaran,Nandkishore,Shravan and Arvind. The situation got out of hand when Subey Tyagi took out his pistol and fired in the air. The other group also took out country-made pistols and began firing. Police had to be called in to bring the situation under control,” the officer said.

Officers said two persons have been arrested. “We do not want to reveal their identities at this stage. More persons will be arrested soon. A case has been registered under IPC sections of attempt to murder, rioting and breach of peace,” an officer said.
