An independent fact-finding committee constituted by Jan Hastakshep,an NGO,to look into the Masuri violence, which left six persons dead, has asked for a judicial probe into the matter.

On September 14,violence broke out in Masuri after desecrated pages of the Quran were found near the Adhyatmak Nagar station.

The report, compiled by journalist Saeed Naqvi and Dr N K Bhattacharya, former principal of Motilal Nehru College, among others, said: “To overcome the atmosphere of fear and establish full facts of the incident,to apportion responsibility for this tragedy involving the loss of six lives,it is important that a judicial probe,by a sitting judge of the High Court, should be conducted without delay. Administrative inquiry will only lead to a cover-up.”

It further stated: “Open-ended FIRs should not be allowed to be misused and stop people from speaking the truth.”

The report also raised doubts on the police’s version that a mob of around 5,000 people were armed, and said it is surprising that the police personnel present had only one functioning weapon.
