A former students union leader of Gorakhpur University was shot dead at his house by unidentified youths in Shahpur area of Gorakhpur late on Tuesday night. The motive behind the murder is yet to be known, but enmity over some property dispute is being probed.
The police said Pradeep Singh was engaged in a business of sale and purchase of disputed properties in the city. He was also facing criminal cases related to the property disputes.
Singh had contested the last student union election in 2006 for the post of president of Gorakhpur University students union, but was defeated by Rajeev Pandey. He was named in a murder case of a student Manish Tiwari, who was shot dead while coming out of a hostel in 2005. Tiwari was a supporter of Pandey in the 2005 election,in which Pandey had lost to Satyapal Pal who was supported by Singh, the police added.
Deputy Inspector General,Gorakhpur Range,Ashok Mutha Jain said Singh had over 10 cases, including those of two murders, attempt to murder and land grabbing, pending against him at different police stations of the district.
The DIG also said though Singh was no more a student of the university for the last few years,he was a frequent visitor to the campus. Some posters of aspiring candidates in the forthcoming union election carried photographs of Singh as supporter.
Shivam, the servant who was present in the house at the time of the shooting, said he was washing utensils in the kitchen when he heard gunshots in the room at 11.30 pm. He did not come to the room, but saw that there were five youths carrying pistols firing at Singh. They left after shooting Singh,Shivam said.
The police added that the victim has suffered more than 10 bullet injuries and the assailants had fired more than 25 rounds.
Shivam also said that the assailants had walked into the house at Dharampur Colony as the door was left open after some of Singhs friends left the house about 15 minutes earlier. The youths did not speak to Singh and fired indiscriminately after entering the room,he added.
