Ex-MLA accused of rape surrenders

Former BSP MLA Ramesh Gautam on Friday surrendered in the court of Lucknow chief judicial magistrate in connection with a case of rape lodged against him at Gomti Nagar police station last month.

Former BSP MLA Ramesh Gautam on Friday surrendered in the court of Lucknow chief judicial magistrate in connection with a case of rape lodged against him at Gomti Nagar police station last month.

Gautam,who represented the Dixir constituency in Gonda in the last assembly election,was accused of rape and sexual exploitation by a reporter of a little-known magazine. Police lodged a case against him at Gomti Nagar police station on April 14. Gautam has been given ticket from Bahraich Lok Sabha seat by the BSP for the coming elections.

Gomti Nagar station officer Devendra Kumar Dubey said police raided Gautam’s house in Gonda to arrest him on Thursday but he was not found there. He said the former MLA surrendered in the CJM court today and has been sent to jail. Police said the complainant has accused Gautam of raping her several times,including once at his rented house in Gomti Nagar area.
