A team of Excise department officials shot dead a villager in Meerut districts Mirzapur during a raid late Tuesday evening. The team was on the lookout for illegal manufacturing units of country-made liquor.
Following this,villagers held the officals hostage and beat them up. Later,the police managed to rescue the officials. Though both groups have lodged FIRs,no arrest has been made so far in the matter.
Meerut ASP (Rural) Sharad Sachan said the excise team led by department Inspector Radheyshyam Shukla,two other inspectors,eight constables and a licenced liquor contractor had raided Mirzapurs Parikshitgarh area in the evening. When they found a few villagers making illicit liquor,the locals attacked the officials.
As the inspectors opened fire with their licenced revolvers to disperse the mob,Balvinder,a villager,sustained bullet injury and died. Following this,angry villagers assaulted the officials,causing fractures to three and leaving eight others critically injured. The villagers then locked the officials in a room and snatched four firearms and mobile phones belonging to them.
The police rescued the officials after receiving information from the district magistrate, the ASP said.
Taking a serious note of the incident,DGP Vikram Singh has issued an order to the police across the state to provide security cover to excise officials if they seek help during such raids.
