Ex-BSP leader held for ‘duping’ man with promise of party ticket

Lucknow police on Sunday arrested a former BSP leader,Dileep Rai Balwani,and his associate Ram Adhar Rai for allegedly duping Allahabad-based businessman Saeedur Rab of Rs 53 lakh on the pretext of arranging a BSP ticket for the Assembly elections.

Lucknow police on Sunday arrested a former BSP leader,Dileep Rai Balwani,and his associate Ram Adhar Rai for allegedly duping Allahabad-based businessman Saeedur Rab of Rs 53 lakh on the pretext of arranging a BSP ticket for the Assembly elections. The complainant said he had given the money in the form of cash and cheques.

Balwani is a native of Jaunpur district and his wife Reeta is Zila Panchayat member of Madiaon.

“We have registered a complaint on the details provided by the complainant and will verify his claim. We would also contact bank officials,” said Station Officer of Gomti Nagar police Station Manoj Kumar Mishra.

He said that Balwani had issued cheques in favour of Saeedur Rab but these were dishonoured. There are three cheques totalling Rs 35 lakh. “We have also found that Balwani had sent several messages to Saeedur Rab’s cellphone,telling him that he would return his money soon,” added Mishra.

Circle Officer Nityanand Rai said there was evidence to prove that Balwani had taken money.

The police said Balwani and Ram Adhar had duped several people and had amassed wealth this way. Also,Balwani had taken contracts of mining worth several crores of rupees in Sonbhadra in the name of one Suresh Gupta.

The police added that during questioning,Ram Adhar admitted to having duped one Dr Shyam Singh of Etah of Rs 7.5 lakh and Divisional Forest Officer Ramesh Chandra of several lakh rupees.

Lucknow DIG Ashutosh Pandey said police was seeking the details of Balwani’s properties and dealings.

However,Balwani alleged that police sub-inspector Jitendra Singh had demanded from him Rs 2 lakh to let him escape and had also beaten him. They ordered an inquiry into his allegations.

Jaunpur district president of BSP Amarjeet Gautam said the party had expelled Balwani in March for anti-party activities. He was then BSP general secretary of Jaunpur district,Gautam said.
