At least 10 policemen, including a sub-inspector (SI), were suspended for alleged dereliction of duty when they took former BJP MLA Uday Bhan Karwariya to his residence, instead of taking him to Naini Central Jail, when he arrived in the city on Sunday after being discharged from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

Karwariya is currently in jail in connection with the murder of Jawahar Pandit in 1996 in Civil Lines police station area of Allahabad.

Confirming the development, a police spokesperson said that all the suspended policemen were currently deployed in the Police Lines and had been put on escort duty where they were supposed to take the BJP leader straight to Naini Central Jail.

“However, they instead went to his home and stayed there for around half-an-hour. When the matter came to the light of senior police officials, they were suspended,” said the spokesperson. The suspended include S-I Balram Puri, Head Constable Jagdish Prasad and eight other constables, he said.

Karwariya, who is a co-accused (others being members of his family) in the then SP’s Jhunsi MLA’s murder case, was arrested in 2013 after the court had initiated property attachment proceedings against him.

His brothers — “former BSP MP Kapil Muni and BSP MLC Suraj Bhan”-were arrested in April this year in the same case. Karwariya, who was Bara MLA from 2007 to 2012, had lost the last Assembly polls while contesting from City (North) constituency.

When he began having complications, he was admitted to Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital. From there, he was referred to AIIMS a few months ago.

On Sunday, the team boarded a train from New Delhi in the morning and reached Allahabad in the afternoon. A prison van was waiting for Karwariya and the officers but the escort party instead got into the Safari belonging to the former MLA even as the prison van followed them to his house in Kalyani Devi area in the old city. There, they stayed for nearly half-an-hour after which the prison van took the accused to Naini jail.
