An MBBS doctor and his wife, along with their servant, were arrested Tuesday for allegedly harassing their 22-year-old domestic help for the past two months at Lucknow’s Mahanagar area.

Police said Ashutosh Singh, his wife,Pragati, and their servant,David, were arrested after their domestic help,Lalita,a resident of Bahraich, lodged a complaint of torture against them. The couple used to beat her, burn her with cigarette butts, and forcibly chop her hair,Lalita has alleged. They also reportedly harassed her, saying she had mistreated their puppy. Lalita has named a fourth accused,Pragati’s friend Waris, who, along with David, used to beat her. Waris is absconding.

Mahanagar station house officer Veer Singh said Ashutosh is an MBBS doctor and stays in Mumbai. He said Pragati,an MBA,lived in Lucknow.

Lalita said she had started working at Ashutosh’s house in April, and Pragati and Waris started torturing her a fortnight later.

According to the police,Lalita, who was allegedly confined in the house, contacted Ashutosh’s neighbour after escaping from the house Tuesday. The neighbour then sent her to the Mahanagar police station.

An FIR under various sections of the IPC including 342 (wrongful confinement) and 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons and means) have been against all four accused.
