An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Delhi Police, who had gone to arrest an accused in a theft case, was shot dead by the brother of the accused during a raid in Bahilpurwa police station area of Chitrakoot district last night.

The ASI was accompanied by a constable, the complainant in the theft case and a friend of the accused.

Additional DG (ADG) Law & Order Arun Kumar said the Delhi police team had not given information about the operation and raided the village without seeking help from the local police.

Chitrakoot Superintendent of Police (SP) K B Singh said they came to know about the incident after receiving a call from Delhi police. They were told that ASI Jai Bhagwan Sharma (59) of Begumpur,Sector 22 police station at Rohini Outer in Delhi was shot at when he had gone there to arrest an accused — Prem Chand — wanted in a theft case registered on May 3.

Singh said they rushed to the spot to know that the ASI had been taken to Hospital Janki Kund in adjacent Satna district of Madhya Pradesh where he was declared brought dead.

A constable,Gauri Shanker,of the same police station of Delhi, complainant Mukesh Kumar Garg and Prem Chand’s friend Ramesh Yadav accompanied the ASI from Delhi.

Ramesh Yadav and Prem Chand belong to Bilhari village in Bahilpurwa area of Chitrakoot where the Delhi police team raided last night, the SP confirmed.

The police team went to Prem Chand’s house at Bilhari the same night, but he could not be found. Prem Chand’s brother Phoolchand said the accused had not come to the house from Delhi.

However, the police team reportedly stayed in Chitrakoot after locals informed that Prem Chand was seen at his house on Tuesday.

The SP said yesterday the ASI and the constable,in plain clothes, reached the village around 9.30 pm and left their Innova vehicle in a school. They walked towards Prem Chand’s house to find a group of villagers including Prem Chand’s brother Phoolchand sitting a few metres away from his house.

While the villagers enquired the ASI about his purpose to coming to the village late in the night,Phoolchand fired at him with a country-made pistol from a close range. The bullet hit the ASI on his waist and he fell on ground while the villagers and the assailant escaped from the place.

The constable and others rushed the ASI to the hospital in Satna, which is about 10 km away from the village, but he succumbed on way following excessive bleeding, added Singh.

The SP also said that they had reached the spot with heavy police force and searched the village for Phoolchand, but he could not be traced. The police have detained those villagers who were present at the spot when the ASI was shot yesterday.

Singh said Prem Chand, who was employed with Mukesh Garg in Delhi, had stolen his employer’s bag containing Rs eight lakh when he had taken his car on May 13. Garg is a transporter. Prem Chand’s friend Ramesh Yadav, who accompanied the police team,is employed with Garg’s brother-in-law. The Delhi police were unknown to the place and they are also interrogating Yadav if he had helped the assailant, the SP added.
