BEFORE ITS Dalit conclave in Lucknow, the Congress has appointed 34-year-old Ajai Kumar Arya, assistant professor at Lucknow University, as the convener who will attempt to connect exclusively with Dalit students and teachers of various universities and colleges across the state and help them resolve their problems.
Arya has been tasked with the duty to form his own team, picking the members from Dalit teachers and students.
Arya, an alumnus of IIT Roorkee, previously did not hold any post in the party.
“We wanted to provide a forum to Dalit students and teachers to raise their problems and find collective solution. Prof Arya agreed to come forward and help,” said Bhagwati Chaudhary, chairman of Congress’s Scheduled Caste department in UP.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Arya said, “I had been active in student politics even at IIT and have been in touch with many Dalit students and teachers. I felt there are lots of issues — from reservation to atrocities — that are not addressed properly. A political forum is required to help victims in such cases.”
He said he has already started making preparation for conventions and seminars on issues concerning Dalits and their rights. He added he would provide his contact number to students and teachers at universities across across the country in case anyone wanted to get in touch with him.
Congress national vice-president Rahul Gandhi and other senior congress leaders would address a Dalit conclave in Lucknow on February 18.
