Hundreds of Congress workers were taken into custody on Thursday when UP Congress led by AICC general secretary Madhusudan Mistry held Ghera dalo,dera dalo protest in Varanasi against the Akhilesh Yadav government alleging deteriorating law and order and misgovernance. The protest was against the non-implementation of the food security scheme in UP. The workers were later released on bail.
Following denial of permission to hold dharna outside collectorate,Congressmen gathered at the Cutting Memorial Ground in Varanasia in the cantonment area and decided to march towards the collectorate. Party leaders also cancelled the two day protest to make a night hault at the dharna site.
Among other leaders,Union Minister of state for Rural Development Pradeep Jain Aditya,Member of Parliament,Raj Babbar,all the four AICC secretaries in-charge of UP and Congress Legislature Party leader Pradeep Mathur participated in the protest. The Congress workers were stopped from marching forward by the police which resorted to use of water cannons and lathi-charge.
Targeting Mulayam Singh Yadav,Mistry said,”The head of the political party ruling the state denies all allegations on UP government,but Congress can feel the pain of farmers and riot victims and is here to support them.”
UPCC president Nirmal Khatri said party workers have resolved to help riot victims. SP government failed to provide proper arrangements but when Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi tried to inquire about the condition of the victims still living in camps,this government saw politics in it. Now Congress has taken a resolution to help the riot victims in Muzaffarnagar, said Khatri.
