The Uttar Pradesh Congress is preparing for a major organisational reshuffle in its district and city units. Sources in the party informed that after a go-ahead from the party high command and AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh last week, presidents of all the eight zones have submitted lists of probable office-bearers under their jurisdiction and the process of appointments is likely to start next week.
The existing units were formed about three years back through election process when Rita Bahuguna Joshi was state president. Despite much hype given to the election process that time,it did not work as planned and lack of co-ordination was seen during the last Assembly election. Nirmal Khatri took over as the new president of the state Congress committee in October 2012 and at the same time the party also appointed eight zonal presidents.
Asked about the selection of district and city presidents,a senior party leader informed,We were told to look for those people who have been with the organisation for long and are aggressive, because future agitations would have to be co-ordinated by district units. The first list of new heads is likely to come in the coming week.
While April 30 has been set as the deadline for completion of the reshuffle, sources informed that the formation of the state Congress committee might take longer as the decision is yet to be taken about the need for a state-level committee or to have eight committees for different zones.
