CMO deaths: CBI summons ex-ministers

The CBI has summoned former family welfare minister Babu Singh Kushwaha and former health minister Anant Mishra for questioning in connection with the murders of family welfare officials and the NRHM scam next week.

The CBI has summoned former family welfare minister Babu Singh Kushwaha and former health minister Anant Mishra for questioning in connection with the murders of family welfare officials and the NRHM scam next week.

Both have been summoned to the CBI headquarters in Delhi,Kushwaha on December 27 and Mishra on December 28,a CBI official said. The agency is investigating the NRHM scam and the murder of CMOs B P Singh and V K Arya,and deputy CMO YS Sachan.

They were ministers at the time of these incidents. Both had resigned owning moral responsibility for the financial irregularities which surfaced in the implementation of NRHM in Lucknow after the murder of B P Singh. Later,Kushwaha was also expelled from the ruling BSP for anti-party activities.

On Friday,the CBI questioned IAS officer Pradeep Shukla at their office in Lucknow’s Hazratganj area. A 1981-batch IAS officer,Shukla was posted as principal secretary of Family Welfare and later also became mission director of NRHM. His tenure covered the period when the incidents under investigation took place.

Vinod Arya was shot dead by motorcycle riders while taking a morning walk on October 27 last year. On April 2,his successor CMO BP Singh was shot dead in an identical fashion near his Gomti Nagar residence. Y S Sachan,who the police said was behind both murders,was found dead in Lucknow jail on the night of June 22.
