Amid the state governments strictures to protect Waqf properties from illegal acquisition or encroachment, complaints against urban local bodies acquiring lands illegally and showing themselves as the owners have made way to Minority Welfare Minister Azam Khan.
A compilation of such complaints, along with an enclosure listing cases of illegal possession, has been sent by Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board chairman Zufar Ahmad Farooqui to Khan, who also holds the portfolios of Muslim Waqf and Urban Development, allege that municipal corporations, nagarpalika parishads and nagar panchayatas in various districts have unduly acquired Waqf properties.
Several complaints have been received regarding illegal grabbing of Waqf properties by the urban local bodies from across the state. Most of the complaints are being received from municipal corporations of major cities like Ghaziabad and others, Farooqui said.
Khan has forwarded the complaints to officials in the Urban Development Department to collect detailed information.
Director of Urban Local Bodies Narendra Kumar Singh has directed all district magistrates, municipal commissioners and chairmen as well as executive officers of other urban local bodies to immediately stop illegal grabbing of Waqf properties by the local bodies. These officials have also been directed to ensure that municipal local bodies do not grab or show their illegal possession on waqf properties in future.
To stop such illegal possession, the state government recently drafted Uttar Pradesh Muslim Waqf Properties (Prevention of Grabbing) Bill 2013,which provides for stringent provisions to protect Waqf properties from illegal grabbing and time-bound settlement of all waqf issues.
