The oath-taking ceremony of the 33 rd UP Chief Minister,Akhilesh Yadav, was marked with his party workers going completely berserk — in a departure from the previous regime’s public functions and negating Akhilesh’s attempt to shrug off the age-old reputation of his party being ruled by unruly elements.

Chaotic scenes were witnessed since the outset of the function. While the ceremony was scheduled to start 11.30 am,people began arriving at the venue as early as 8.30 am.

The crowd swelled to around 10,000 people with a large number of people breaking into the barricaded area and capturing the seats meant for VIPs. “When we asked them to clear off from the barricaded area, they either claimed to have come from Etawah (Mulayam Singh Yadav’s home town) or threatened to call up some senior SP leader,” said an information officer on duty.

Samajwadi Party’s S R S Yadav was seen trying to maintain order before the arrival of the dignitaries. Every now and then,he pleaded with the crowd to keep away from the boxes designated for VIP guests and designated ministers.

Reliance chairperson Anil Ambani, one among the guests at the function, was seen moving around for want of a chair.

A tense CM designate Akhilesh Yadav, too, stopped at the stairs of the dais and requested the people to maintain order and settle down.

However, amid all the confusion and chaos,Akhilesh went round the stage to greet the crowd before joining Governor B L Joshi for the oath-taking ceremony. Mismanagement on the dais forced Akhilesh to pick the microphone and place it in front of him. To add to the confusion,Azam Khan, the first minister to take oath after the CM,faltered during oath-taking,missing out completely on the first part of the oath.

The slogans of “Samajwadi Party Zindabad” and “Akhilesh Yadav Zindabad” drowned the national anthem that followed the ceremony.

As soon as the oath-taking ceremony was over, the mob charged at the dais. The Governor had to wait a few minutes before security personnel could clear the area for his exit. Though Akhilesh and Joshi were escorted out,the ministers on the dais, including Azam Khan, had to wade through the mob to leave the premises.

Soon, some 400 SP workers hijacked the dais, shouting slogans and plucking decorative flowers to shower them at the crowd. The drama continued for over half an hour with the police force being mute spectators.

The government officials on duty could not help but remember the previous regime of Mayawati when “nobody, not even the ministers, dared any kind of indiscipline”.
