A mob of cane farmers clashed with security guards and other staff members of a sugar mill after one of them was crushed to death by his own tractor at the gates of the mill in Haryawan area of Hardoi district Thursday evening.
The farmer died after he slipped from the driving seat and was trapped under the wheels of the tractor.
The police registered a murder case against general manager (GM) Sanjiv Chawla and three other officials of the mill, but no arrest was made till late night.
Hardoi superintendent of police (SP) RK Srivastava told The Indian Express that the incident took place when the farmers carrying sugarcane on tractors and those on trucks entered an altercation over getting entry into the mill.
Meanwhile, one of the farmers Pankaj Pandey (24) on the tractor stopped the vehicle at the entrance of the mill and was engaged in a heated exchange with a truck driver. Suddenly,Pandey slipped from the driving seat and fell down. Since the tractor was geared up and he had only pulled the brakes, the moment Pandey fell, the tractor moved on and trampled him,the SP added.
Srivastava also said that angry over the death of Pandey, the farmers damaged the security check cabin at the gates and an ambulance which had arrived to take the body to the hospital. The mob started throwing stones at the security guards, who later fired in the air to disperse the farmers.
