LUCKNOW: Nearly 52 per cent voters exercised their franchise during the urban local bodies poll in 20 districts of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. The State Election Commission claimed that the polling was peaceful and incident free. The SEC has ordered re-poll in one polling booth of ward No. 4 in Shahjahanpur Nagar Palika where contesting candidates staged a protest alleging bogus voting after they found that around 50 bundles of ballot papers of another ward No. 25 were provided at their booth. Re-poll will be held on July 3. State election commissioner S K Agarwal said that voters turn out was satisfactory looking at the hot weather conditions. Polling was held today in 2543 municipal wards in 147 urban local bodies. In the next phase of elections,polling will be in 16 districts on July 4.
Pranab to visit Lucknow tomorrow
Lucknow: UPA candidate for Presidential election Pranab Mukherjee will visit Lucknow on July 3. The information was given by UP Congress spokesperson Vijay Saxena. Mukherjee had promised Mayawati that he would soon visit her in Lucknow after she became one of his proposers. Saxena said Mukherjee would arrive in Lucknow on July 3 morning and meet leaders of all the parties as promised,including Mayawati and Mulayam Singh Yadav. While Mulayam was present during filing of nomination papers and had been one of his proposers,Mayawati had signed the papers in Lucknow,which were brought by Congress leader Rajeev Shukla. In the evening,he is expected to meet Congress leaders from the state.
PAC constable held for forgery
LUCKNOW: Police have arrested a Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) head constable of PACs 25 Battalion based in Rae Bareli for allegedly withdrawing Rs 23 lakh from the General Provident Fund (GPF) of PAC officials by forging fake sanction letters. Jitendra Kumar was arrested from the Battalions premises in Kotwali police station area of Rae Bareli on Sunday. An FIR has been lodged against him under various Sections of IPC including 409 (Criminal breach of trust by public servant),467 (forgery) and 420 (cheating) on the complaint of Battalions Assistant Commandant Sita Ram at Kotwali police station.
Father booked for having boy kidnapped
Bulandshahr: A case has been registered against a man for allegedly getting his seven-year-old son kidnapped and demanding ransom from his grandfather for his release,police said. On the instructions of the childs father Amit,Karthik,a resident of Sikandrabad town,was kidnapped by Shivkumar (25) last Wednesday,SSP Gulab Singh said. While an FIR was lodged by Amit,a ransom of Rs 10 lakh was demanded by the kidnapper by phone. Shivkumar was arrested after tracing the call.
