The body of Army Subedar Arun Kumar Sharma (49),who was killed in exchange of fire at LoC in Kupwara on Saturday,reached his native place in Gorakhpurs Kalani village on Monday and the last rites were conducted with Guard of Honour. Government officials and BJP MP Yogi Adityanath were among those who participated in the last rites.
Sharmas cousin Som Nath Sharma said Arun had come to the village two months ago. He told me his retirement was due in 2015 and senior officials were advising him to take extension of two years. I told him to go for extension if his health allows him, said Som Nath,a retired army jawan.
Arun,who was a subedar with 56 Rashtriya Rifles (RR),is survived by his mother Suggi Devi,wife Usha Devi and three children. His father S B Sharma was also in the Army and died in 2004.
Som Nath said they have been informed that on Saturday a troop of 56 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) spotted a few persons trying to infiltrate into the Valley from Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir. They were asked to surrender but the heavily armed militants opened indiscriminate fire on the soldiers,leading to retaliatory firing.
