A VISUALLY IMPAIRED madrasa teacher, who is also a cleric at a mosque in Moradabad, was arrested on Tuesday for reportedly calling the police control room (PCR) two days ago and threatening to trigger off an explosion in the city on Holi, if ulemas lodged in different jails were not released.

The man, Wakeel Ahmed, reportedly identified himself as a member of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and described JeM founder Maulana Azhar Masood as his leader.

An FIR has been lodged against him at Civil Lines police station on charges of criminal intimidation and giving statement conducing to public mischief. Ahmed was produced before the court on Tuesday, which sent him to judicial custody.

Civil Lines Station House Officer B P Baliyan said Ahmed has confessed to the crime. “When asked why he made the call, Ahmed said he used to listen to Azhar Masood’s speeches and was influenced by him. He made the call in order ‘to contribute something’ from his side,” he claimed.

He added: “The PCR received the call on Sunday night… The caller identified himself as a member of JeM and said Azhar Masood was his leader. He threatened to explode a bomb if Ulemas lodged in jails were not released. He asked the policeman who took his call to convey the message to the Prime Minister.”

“He also said that a meeting of ulemas will be held in Delhi on March 12 and that he lives in Thakurdwara area of the city,” said Baliyan. Later, a police team traced the call to a mosque.

“Wakeel Ahmed called the PCR from the cellphone of a 15-year-old boy, who also lives in the mosque. He called when the boy had gone to sleep after putting his cellphone on charge,” Moradabad ASP Yash Veer Singh said. While Ahmed lives in the mosque — located at Suraj Nagar locality in Thakurdwara — his family stays in Delhi, he added.
