With the state witnessing a spate of communal clashes in the last 15 days, Cabinet minister Shivpal Yadav on Monday accused the BJP of “blowing up small incidents” by giving them “communal colour” to “orchestrate” riots in Uttar Pradesh.
“For past three years, BJP is engaged in flaring up even small incidents and giving them communal colour. They highlight even small incidents as communal riots and spread canard,” Shivpal said.

“They (BJP) fooled people of the state in Lok Sabha polls and again want to do the same. But, it will not be repeated. Their work from the onset is to vitiate the atmosphere, create communal tension, disturb peace and eventually communal riots. We will not tolerate such activities. There is zero tolerance towards such sinister acts,” the senior Samajwadi Party leader said, adding, “Even officers, if found lax in duty will be dealt with strictly”.
Citing figures from National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Shivpal claimed that law and order situation in UP was far better than 26 other states. “Had there been a law and order problem, the number of tourists visiting UP would have come down. But, their number is increasing and so are the investments,” he claimed.
On the just-concluded two-day dharna by BJP, which has also submitted a memorandum to the Governor and announced to approach the President against the Samajwadi Party government, Shivpal said, “They should have done their ‘natak’ outside Lok Sabha so that central government was pressured into releasing the state’s due share of financial assistance”.
The SP leader said, while the state government distributed over Rs 3,446 crore to 44 lakh farmers affected by unseasonal rains and hailstorm, Centre did not give a single penny.
Speaking about BJP state president Laxmikant Bajpai, Shivpal said, “He is upset as his party lost most of the elections in state since Lok Sabha polls. He understands his position so he is frustrated”.
