Barelvi cleric elevated,wants SP to review candidates

Hours after the state government appointed Tauqeer Raza Khan,a prominent Muslim cleric of Barelvi sect,as Vice-Chairman of the State Handloom Corporation with the rank of minister of state on Monday,Raza placed his demand before the Samajwadi Party leadership to reconsider some of their Lok Sabha candidates in Bareilly and Moradabad divisions.

Hours after the state government appointed Tauqeer Raza Khan,a prominent Muslim cleric of Barelvi sect,as Vice-Chairman of the State Handloom Corporation with the rank of minister of state on Monday,Raza placed his demand before the Samajwadi Party leadership to reconsider some of their Lok Sabha candidates in Bareilly and Moradabad divisions.

Raza also demanded that a probe committee be constituted to investigate several riots which took place after Akhilesh Yadav took over as Chief Minister. Raza heads political outfit Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC) which has a lone MLA Shahzil Islam from Bhojipura in Bareilly. He said he had not merged his outfit in the SP,but will not field candidates in the Lok Sabha election.

After Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari’s distanced himself from the Samajwadi Party,Raza is the only prominentMuslim cleric who had come out in support of SP.

“I am accepting the post but my few demands are still pending. If they fulfill them,it will be much easier to work with SP leadership,” he stated.

“I had meetings with Mulayam and Akhilesh and it was agreed that I will support them in the Lok Sabha elections and will contest assembly elections jointly,” he stated.

21 die as bus falls in Etah canal

Twenty-one persons died and 23 others sustained serious injuries when a roadways bus carrying them fell into a canal in Etah’s Pilua area Monday early morning.

The injured were admitted to the district hospital and doctors stated their condition was stable. The police said the bus was going from Farrukhabad to Delh via Etah and Aligarh.

“We have no information about the driver and the conductor of the bus. A search is on to trace them”,said Circle Officer of Etah Mahipal Singh,adding that the bus has been pulled out of the canal with the help of a crane.

Among the deceased,the identity of 17 persons had been ascertained till now and efforts are being made to identify others. The victim are from Aligarh,Etah,Farukkabad and Delhi.

Station Officer of Pilua Anwar Ali said they were informed about the incident by a police constable who was deployed near the spot.

A police team rushed to the place and with the help of divers who helped pulling the passengers out of the bus.
