The Allahabad University is planning to hold its convocation for the first time in eight years since becoming a central university in 2005.

The AU authorities have invited applications from meritorious undergraduate and postgraduate students of various disciplines for the Chancellor’s Gold,Silver and Bronze medals. Students belonging to batches of 2004-05 to 2011-12 are eligible for the awards. The last date for submitting application is July 13.

“Various things have been put in place. But unless the chief guest is finalised and we get his nod, along with other required approvals, everything is tentative. As and when that is done, final dates and other programmes will be finalised,” Dean (Research and Development) N R Farooqi, under whose chairmanship a committee will oversee the preparations, said. Farooqi added that the university would like to hold the convocation on September 23,its foundation day.

About the reasons for the eight-year gap in holding the convocation, the professor said,“The new ordinances and other rules and regulations, which lay down guidelines for things like convocation, arrived only in 2008.”

“There were plans to hold the convocation last year, too. However, due to various issues, the university could not,” he added. Sources said last year the students’ union election was more in focus even as the authorities struggled to keep violence on campus under control.
