Uttar Pradesh BJP will “felicitate” its MLAs Sangeet Singh Som and Suresh Rana, who were arrested for allegedly inciting communal violence in Muzaffarnagar, during party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s rally in Agra on November 21. Both the MLAs are currently out on bail.

“We will felicitate them at the rally so that it gives inspiration to the party workers to struggle (against the state government),” state BJP president Laxmikant Bajpai said. He said Som and Rana were sent to jail on “fake grounds” because they “raised the issues affecting people”.

Bajpai, however, added that the MLAs’ will be felicitated before Modi arrives to address the gathering.

Earlier, addressing a rally in Bahraich,Modi had claimed that the UP government had tried to defame the BJP by sending its two MLAs to jail on baseless charges.

Som and Rana were arrested in September for allegedly inciting people for violence before the communal riots broke out in Muzaffarnagar. Som was also booked for allegedly sharing a “provocative” video on a social networking site. Later, the state government had invoked National Security Act (NSA) against the duo. However, the it was revoked by the NSA advisory board on November 7.

While Som represents Sardhana constituency of Meerut district in UP Assembly,Rana is an MLA from Thana Bhawan constituency of Shamli district.

Rihai Manch,an organisation working for the release of “innocent Muslims imprisoned in the name of terrorism,” has also submitted a complaint at Aminabad police station in Lucknow Saturday alleging that Som continued to operate an account on a social networking website to fuel communal passions while lodged in jail.
