An FIR has been registered against Apna Dal general secretary and MLA from Rohania Assembly constituency,Anupriya Patel, her husband,Ashish, and eight of her supporters for allegedly beating up government officials of revenue department and damaging government records.

Patel and her supporters got involved in the alleged fracas with officials, including a Lekhpal, late Tuesday night.

The FIR was registered at Jansa police station in Varanasi after the District Magistrate took cognizance of the matter. Patel, however, denied charges and added the FIR was politically motivated.

Terming the registration of FIR as “shameful”,Patel said her husband was not even at the spot where the incident took place. She alleged this could not have been done without orders from the top and added she would contest the FIR in a court of law.

Police said Shakuntala Devi,of Khevli village under Jansa police station area, had attended the tehsil divas of Sadar Tehsil and alleged that a chak road was being constructed through her land although there was no plan for the same. The District Magistrate ordered a team of revenue department officials to visit the spot for verification.

The team, comprising a Naib Tehsildar,a kanoongo and Lekhpal Girish Singh, reached Khevli village and carried out the measurements. “Prima facie, the officials found there was nothing wrong with the chak road,as it did not go through her land. Subsequently, the complainant called up the MLA who reached there with her supporters around 5 pm. There was an argument with the officials and they were beaten up,” said SP (Rural),Pradeep Gupta. Singh sustained injuries.

“However, the fact was MLA’s supporters fought with the team and damaged official records. The FIR was registered on the basis of complaint lodged by Singh,” said Gupta.

The FIR has been registered under various sections pertaining to rioting, causing injury, criminal intimidation and obstructing public servant in discharge of his duty.
