The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (GCMMF),popularly known as Amul,is planning to set up a milk chilling plant at Saifai, the native village of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav situated in Etawah. Later,a processing plant with a capacity of 2 lakh litres of milk per day will also be set up.
Etawah already has a Mother Dairy plant at Vaidpura, which is nearly 10 km from Saifai and collects milk from nearly 70,000 farmers.
We will first start our unit in Saifai. It is being done on the request of the state government. For us,location is not an issue. We are ready to begin our operation at Saifai or any other place, said Sanjay Karamchandani,Managing Director (MD),Banaskatha District Cooperative Milk Producing Union Limited, commonly known as Banas Dairy, which is part of Amul.
For the milk chilling plant at Saifai, eight acres of land has already been identified by the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Corporation (UPSIDC). Another six acres of land has also been earmarked. Only 10 acres of land will be required for the proposed milk chilling plant. A farmers training centre for dairy development is proposed to be set up on the remaining four acres. The milk chilling plant is likely to become functional in the next six months.
For us,distance is not a hindrance. We are not into profit-making business as we function for the welfare of farmers. The state government expedited things for Saifai and we accepted it, Karamchandani stated.
He said milk at the chilling plant will be collected from a 200 km radius.
UP is the largest milk producing state of the country with an average production of nearly six crore litres per day. Only one per cent is procured by the cooperatives.
The remaining 99 per cent is in unorganised market and private sector. We hope to get a major market share, which will bring good rates to farmers and consumers, Karamchandani said.
Dairies at Lucknow,Kanpur non-starters
In Kanpur,Amul has been allotted 40 acres of land at Jainapur Industrial Area for the plant. We have deposited the amount but we are yet to get the possession of the land. Everything is in the hands of the state government. We will be spending nearly 125 crores on the dairy plant at Kanpur, said Sanjay Karamchandani,MD,Banas Dairy, which is part of Amul.
For Lucknow,Karamchandani said a proposal for setting up a dairy plant at Chak Gajariya Farm has been submitted to the government but there has been no progress. This project involves an investment of Rs 200 crore but we have not got any confirmation.
