A student of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was arrested along with six others today for dacoity at the home of a retired AMU engineer.
Police claimed the student had admitted his involvement in the incident,as well as two other dacoities in Aligarh. The AMU administration,however,denied any action against the student in the absence of official communication from the police.
The arrested student has been identified as Asif Ahmed of LLB IV semester,who resides at Ambedkar Hall of the university. A native of Moradabad,Asif was arrested from Aligarh today. The other six accused hail from Sambhal and Moradabad.
Armed miscreants had looted jewellery and cash worth Rs 32 lakh from the house of retired AMU engineer Khurshid Ahmed in Firasat Nagar Colony under Civil Lines police station on April 15. Police got a tip that the ornaments were sold to a jeweller in Moradabad. The jeweller revealed the names of those who had sold the ornaments. The accused revealed the name of Asif as the mastermind of the dacoity.
Asif gave tuition classes near the campus. While doing so,he would collect information and pass it on to other gang members for the crime, Yogendra Malik,Inspector,Civil Lines police station,Aligarh said.
