Five members of an extended family, including a sub-inspector (S-I), were killed in a clash over the renovation of a temple at Ekauni village in Kaundhiyara police station area of Allahabad, police said Monday. The incident took place Sunday when the S-I’s father Ram Kailash Pandey objected to the work being carried out at the temple by his cousin and neighbour Shiv Sewak Pandey, Inspector General (IG) of Police, Allahabad, R K Chaturvedi said.
Chaturvedi said, both the side have lodged FIRs on murder charge naming 27 people of which 12 have been arrested. They were produced before the court, which sent them to judicial custody. Two licensed rifles allegedly used in the crime have been recovered.
Heavy police force have been deployed in the village to maintain peace, the IG said.

Of the five deceased two, S-I Suresh Pandey (35) and his father Ram Kailash (65), are from one part of the family. The other victim’s are Ram Kailash’s cousin and neighbour Shiv Sewak Pandey (55), his younger brother Krishna Sewak (48) and their nephew Vimal (32). The S-I’s wife and Vimal’s father Ram Sewak suffered injuries in the clash.
The S-I, who was posted in Kanpur city, had come to his native place Saturday on leave.
Allahabad Range DIG J K Shahi said there had been an old enmity between the two families and they indulged in a fresh row when the S-I’s family got a temple constructed near their house recently and Shiv Sevak, a retired CRPF official, started getting an old temple in front of his house renovated.
He further said the S-I’s father, Ram Kailash, whose house is located behind the old temple, reached the place Sunday afternoon and asked the labourers to stop the construction work. Shiv Sewak along with his brothers and other family members entered in a verbal duel with Ram Kailash, he added.
DIG said, during heated exchange, Shiv Sewak allegedly slapped Ram Kailash. Angry over it, the S-I brought out his licensed rifle and fired at Shiv Sewak, Krishna Sewak and Vimal killing them at the spot. Shiv Sewak’s other family members overpowered the S-I and snatched his rifle. They thrashed his father to death and shot the S, also killing him at the spot, the DIG added.
Locals informed the police following which 12 persons from both the sides were taken in custody. Statements of both families have been recorded, police said, adding further investigations are underway.
