Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday met his father and SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav at his Lucknow residence and discussed the party’s 10th national convention scheduled for October 5 in Agra.

The duo had been at the centre of a family dispute over control of the SP till earlier this year when Akhilesh managed to take the reigns of the party.

Relations soured to the point that some leaders claimed Mulayam was not invited to the national convention and later the party founder even replaced Akhilesh supporters in the Ram Manohar Lohia Trust.

However, on Monday, there was sign of improvement when Mulayam, at a press meet on Monday, decided not to form a new front or party and instead appealed to the public to strengthen it. He is said to have adviced his brother Shivpal Singh Yadav from splitting from the party too.

Sources said that Mulayam on Thursday asked his son to speak with other party leaders and take them along. This could be a reference to Shivpal who was reportedly upset at Mulayam’s decision to stick with the party, sources said.

While there are unconfirmed reports that Akhilesh “invited” Mulayam to the Agra convention, party spokesperson and MLC Udaiveer Singh said, “Netaji (Mulayam) is patron of the party and he is always invited and welcome to the party event.” At Monday’s press meet Mulayam had said he would not attend the convention.

Singh said that party is running under guidance of Netaji and that Akhilesh would have sought his suggestions for the national convention. It will be first such party convention under Akhilesh’s leadership and he is expected to be re-elected as party chief for another five years.

Well-paced party leaders, meanwhile, said that they do not expect Mulayam to attend the convention in any case.

“Also, we cannot guess what Mulayam might say. He may speak any thing. He may support Akhilesh or may even speak something against him that could embarrass for Akhilesh in front of nearly 15,000 delegates from around 25 states,” said a party leader.

Party’s 10th national convention will be held in Agra on October 5 and party national executive committee will meet there on October 4 to pass political and economic resolutions. These resolutions with emphasis on the policies of NDA government of the Center and preparation for 2019 will be discussed in the national convention.
