In a clean-up before the student union elections,Lucknow University today expelled 10 students and barred one student from the varsity and its affiliated colleges for various reasons.

At least seven of them were planning to contest elections next month,including four for president,two for vice-president and one for general secretary.

The students are Mani Kumar Singh,Rudresh Pratap Singh,Vinay Kumar Singh,Ved Prakash Yadav,all presidential aspirants; Surya Pratap Singh and Wasim Ahmed Pintoo,vice-presidential aspirants; and Ajit Kumar Singh Yadav,who wanted to contest for the post of general secretary. Others were Upendra Pratap Singh,Ajay Kumar Verma,Ajit Kumar Verma and Ajit Srivastava.

“It’s a collective decision,taken with a heavy heart. But it became imperative to maintain the law and order situation in the campus,” said proctor Pawan Aggarwal.

Ajit Srivastava was enrolled in the BCA course of the university in the last academic session. He,along with Ajay Kumar Verma and Ajit Kumar Verma,allegedly assaulted Atul Kumar,the gatekeeper of Mehmoodabad hostel,and tried to give him electric shocks on June 14. An FIR was registered under Sections 323 and 342 of IPC.

Ajay Kumar Verma was also allegedly involved in the assault of one Abhinav Singh,an MBA student,on August 28 apart from an assault on tempo drivers and junior doctors on May 5. “The argument began around midnight and soon turned violent. However,a major incident was averted following prompt intervention by the university administration,” proctor Aggrawal said.

Surya Pratap,Rudresh,Wasim,Ajit Kumar Yadav,Ved Prakash and Upendra were involved in disruption of graduate admissions,pelting of stones and throwing of chairs on police,teachers and at university employees on July 2.

Mani Kumar and Upendra are involved in nine cases and feature in four FIRs each. This includes multiple cases of assault in the campus,dating back to 2007.
