The Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP),which suspended its conventions for about a week following the Allahabad High Court July 11 order staying caste rallies across the state, has resumed them under a new name.
Dropping any reference to a particular caste, the party has rechristened its conventions as Bahujan Samaj Party Karyakarta Sammelan (BSP workers convention) or BSP Sarva Samaj Karyakarta Sammelan (BSP all-community convention) to be held in various constituencies ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
Leader of Opposition in Vidhan Sabha Swami Prasad Maurya has already addressed one such convention in Bahraich city on Sunday in support of partys LS candidate Tribhuan Dutt.
Maurya will hold another convention titled BSPs district-level workers convention in Hardoi on Thursday.
Earlier,Mauryas conventions used to be named after Kushwaha,Maurya,Saini and Shakya castes.
UP BSP president Ram Achal Rajbhar will also hold a similar convention, his first after the courts stay order,at Barabanki on August 1,Rajbhars rallies were earlier called Rajbhar Samaj Bhaichara Sammelan.
A senior party leader said conventions will also not be organised under the banner of any of the partys Bhaichara Committees like Muslim Samaj Bhaichara Committee and Brahmin Samaj Bhaichara Committee.
The Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court had stayed caste-based rallies in UP through an interim order on July 11,while hearing a public interest litigation, seeking ban of such rallies. The petitioner had prayed that such rallies were leading to division in the society on caste lines.
Earlier, the BSP had organised more than 30 rallies, named Brahmin Samaj Bhaichara Sammelans,in the state, which were addressed by party general secretary Satish. After High Court stay,BSP rechristens caste rallies . Party leader Naseemuddin Siddiqui had also addressed Muslim Samaj Bhaichara Sammelans.
After the courts stay order,BSP president Mayawati had said that the party will continue holding these caste conventions but their names will be changed. She said Indian society is centred on the caste system and the BSP was holding these conventions to unite these castes and not to create disharmony among them.
