40 sugar mills booked for irregularities in cane purchase

FIRs have been lodged against 40 sugar mills in various districts for serious irregularities in cane purchase, including irregularities pertaining to weighing of sugarcane and cane receipts.

According to Bhupendra Singh Bisht, chief publicity officer, cane commissioner’s office, these FIRs were lodged in the last 10 days against one mill of Deoria (Gorakhpur division), two mills of Saharanpur division, three of Devipatan division, six of Meerut division, eight of Moradabad division and 20 of Bareilly division.

The action was taken after several cane purchase centres were raided by cane officials, said a press release issued by Cane Commissioner Subhash Chand Sharma.  Sharma said irregularities were found in 359 of the 3,847 cane purchase centres that were raided by the officials. Apart from the FIRs, licences of 47 ‘weighmen’ clerks responsible for weighing cane were also cancelled.
So far, sugar mills of the state have crushed 25.44 crore quintal of cane to produce 2.25 crore quintal of sugar. The sugar recovery percentage from cane is 8.84 per cent.
