Violence again broke out on the Allahabad University (AU) campus here on Thursday when a group of young men, armed with sticks and rods, assaulted the students of Centre for Computer Education (CCE) over an apparently trivial matter.

According to university officials, the incident occurred around 1.30 pm in the canteen and the ground just outside the CCE,which is part of the Institute of Professional Studies,AU,and is located on the main campus.

“At least four students were injured. But the injuries are not very serious,” said Acting Proctor Prof N K Shukla. In their complaint to the university officials, the injured students said they had come out of their classes after a training session and were having lunch at the canteen, when around a dozen men, armed with sticks and rods, attacked them.

“The victims are not able to tell who these people were. We are trying to find out,” said Shukla. The injured students were scared and not ready to go for medical examination,he added. “The university administration will lodge a formal complaint with the police,” said Shukla.

AU sources said that a smaller group had assaulted two students of CCE around 11.30 am following an argument over a trivial matter. Around 1.30 pm,they returned in a larger group and damaged property in the canteen besides assaulting two other students. The assailants were said to be residents of one of the hostels. However, the officials maintained that the identity of the attackers has not yet been established.

Today’s incident is yet another example of the fast deteriorating situation on the campus. Even as the Allahabad High Court has taken note of the matter, the AU authorities have continued to blame the district police and administration for not cooperating with them in ensuring peace on the campus.
