Worried about his party’s prospects in the Lok Sabha elections,Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav Saturday urged his partymen not to punish him for the misdeeds of his ministers, legislators and MPs.

“If you are angry and your minister,MLA or MP has done anything wrong, then do not take revenge on me. Will you send me alone to Parliament? he asked partymen during a function held to commemorate the 47th death anniversary of socialist ideologue Ram Manohar Lohia in Lucknow Saturday.

He went on to warn that “I am keeping a sharp eye on people who are in power. Their behaviour should change, else it will be difficult for me”.

“I know there are some wrong things going on but they are all sitting here and the Chief Minister will talk to them and improve them,” the SP president said in the presence of CM Akhilesh Yadav, minister Shivpal Yadav and other cabinet ministers.

The workers clapped in support while ministers remained silent.

Conscious that the party’s image has taken a severe beating following the Muzaffarnagar riots, the SP supremo asked ministers to work for the satisfaction of public. “Do not think that the public is illiterate. They are very clever and aware. It is the same public that routed the Congress in 1977. Don’t do things that bring satisfaction only to you; the public should be satisfied and it should be visible.” He directed “improve your working, behaviour and the way of interaction with public”.

He also recalled his struggle during the Emergency days and Lohia’s anti-Congress stand. “Lohia had raised voice against Nehru and corruption by the Congress. It is even true now. Scams have become the order of the day while Prime Minister is speechless.”

He also reached out to the Muslim votebank, saying the Sachar Committee recommendations were gathering dust and no action has been taken by PM.

Mulayam also referred to the UPA government as coward as it failed to act on Chinese aggression. “We have a brave Army but when Chinese encroached our land, the government failed to act. It sent out a message that India is a weak country.”

Akhilesh, too, spoke on uplift of Muslims and the good work done by his government. “The Home Minister has written now that no innocent Muslim should be harassed. Netaji had been doing it for quite long. Now when we are withdrawing terror cases against Muslims,it is said we are working only for ‘one section’. There is no discrimination in the schemes run by my government,” he said.

Akhilesh told partymen that the outcome of the elections will depend on spreading the message of good work done by the government. “You should be well-prepared while participating in TV debates,” he said.

A word of praise

SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav Saturday appreciated the Akhilesh Yadav government’s functioning, stating its welfare schemes have set a benchmark. “Now,no state government will be able to function unless it launches such schemes,” he said.
