10 more die in Varanasi hooch tragedy,raids on in district

The toll in the hooch tragedy rose to 16 on Thursday after 10 more people died from consuming spurious liquor in Varanasi’s Soyepur village.

Twelve others are undergoing treatment at various hospitals after they fell ill on Wednesday.

The state government has suspended six employees of the Excise Department and initiated departmental proceedings against two senior officers.

“Excise Inspector Rajesh Singh and five other employees — Dev Prakash Singh,Shiv Prasad Rana,Shashikant Singh,Shiv Karan,Amar Singh — have been suspended on charges of laxity,” said Additional Excise Commissioner Shamim Ahmed Khan.

Besides,departmental proceedings have been initiated against Assistant Excise Commissioner Sunil Kumar Mishra and Assistant Excise Commissioner (Enforcement) Rajesh Kumar Sinha,the official said. Both Sunil and Rajesh are posted at Varanasi.

Four policemen — Sub-Inspector Ram Narain,the in-charge of Lalpur police outpost,and three constables — have already been suspended.

According to the police,preliminary investigations have revealed that illicit liquor was smuggled from Jharkhand and was being illegally supplied in the area.

The police have lodged a case against six persons and arrested two accused,Raj Kumar and Ambu Devi.

Gopal and Bhonu Jaiswal,who are the main accused in the case,and two others are still at large.

Meanwhile,the joint teams of the excise department and police are conducting raids in different parts of the district to seize illicit liquor.

Khan said the teams have seized 107 pouches of the country-made liquor that were illegally brought from Jharkhand.
