After meeting Khalid Mujahid’s co-accused Tariq Qasmi in Lucknow jail,Maharashtra’s Samajwadi Party president and MLA Abu Asim Azmi on Thursday claimed Khalid Mujahid had died a natural death.

Azmi met Qasmi along with the latter’s uncle Mumtaz Ahmed and enquired about the sequence of events leading to Khalid’s death.

Both of them also met Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav at his residence and apprised him of their meeting with Qasmi. They said Akhilesh assured them of all possible legal help.

Khalid died while returning from Faizabad court to Lucknow jail on May 18. Tariq Qasmi and two other terror accused accompanied him in the police van.

“After meeting Tariq Qasmi and collecting information about Khalid’s death,I have no doubt that Khalid died a natural death. There was no conspiracy to kill him. The SP government cannot be blamed for the incident,” Azmi said.

Mumtaz said Qasmi too accepted that Khalid had died a natural death.

However,Mohammad Shoeb, the lawyer of Qasmi, claimed that Azmi and Mumtaz are not telling the truth.

“By chance,I was also in the jail at that time. They met Tariq in the Jail Superintendent’s office. Despite their insistence,Tariq did not admit that it was a natural death. He insisted that Khalid was alive when he was taken to Barabanki hospital,” Shoeb claimed.

He also said that Azmi had managed the whole show to defend the SP government. “They tried to bring Tariq’s father-in-law Aslam but he refused. They somehow managed Mumtaz to accompany them’’,Shoeb said. Tariq’s father Riyaz Ahmed is in Dubai and Mumtaz looked after Qasmi in India.

Mumtaz said that Tariq told him Khalid had a problem for the past three days. “He had pain in his hand and shoulder. While leaving for Faizabad,Tariq asked him to skip the date on medical grounds but Khalid insisted,” Mumtaz said.

He said Tariq told them that while returning from Faizabad,Khalid fell on his shoulder. “The prisoners, with the help of policemen, laid him down and the van was stopped. Information was conveyed to higher police officials. Since they were at Ram Sanehi Ghat in Barabanki, they rushed to District Hospital at Barabanki,” Mumtaz stated.

“Now the only possibility of murder is inside hospital which I think is irrational. The CM deputed two Muslim doctors in the panel for postmortem. Even a Muslim IPS officer was included in the investigation ordered by the state government. Akhilesh Yadav’s intention is clean and we cannot doubt it,” Azmi said.

Mumtaz claimed that since Tariq’s arrest in 2007,they tried to meet then chief minister Mayawati for two years in vain. “We are satisfied that we can meet CM and tell our grievances. Today Akhilesh assured us that justice will be done,” Mumtaz stated.

Azmi said a decision will be taken on the Nimesh Commission’s report soon. “It will be done within 2-3 days. Hectic discussion is going on in the government,” Azmi stated.
