A 19-year-old girl was found burnt to death at her residence in North Delhi’s Majnu ka Tila area on Thursday afternoon.

Police said, prima facie,it appeared to be a case of suicide.

The incident was reported to the PCR around 1.30 pm. The caller told police that a girl had set herself ablaze at her residence. A team was rushed to the spot and the girl, identified as Sangeeta, was taken to a hospital nearby where she was declared brought dead.

Sangeeta’s father runs a book stall at the New Delhi railway station. Police said at the time of the incident, her brothers were away in Lucknow and Sangeeta’s sister had gone to college. Sangeeta, police said, was pursuing a correspondence course but had recently discontinued her studies and had been staying at home.

A senior police officer said,“Sangeeta’s mother was at home at the time of the incident. It appears that Sangeeta locked herself in her room and set herself ablaze.”

The officer said a five-litre can of kerosene oil was recovered from the spot. Police said Sangeeta’s family had decided to arrange her marriage and that she was unhappy about it.

Sangeeta’s family, however, alleged foul play in her death. They claimed that the kerosene oil can recovered from the house did not belong to them.

“Sangeeta’s parents told us that someone was perhaps keeping track of their daughter’s movements and probably killed her,” the officer said.

A post-mortem examination was conducted on Friday morning and the viscera has been preserved.

Police said things will be clear once they receive the report.
