Train services at Howrah station were stalled for about three hours due to protests following the death of a woman who got run over on the tracks at Tikiapara.

The incident took place around 7 pm. The woman was hit by a local train as she tried to cross the tracks. Rail officials said they tried to take her to the hospital but agitators did not allow them and later she died at the spot.

The agitators then started pelting stones at other trains, damaging the glass of one express train and injuring the assistant driver of another. A large number of local and express trains were stopped at Howrah and the adjoining stations. GRP and RPF officials had to resort to lathicharge to remove agitators who squatted on the tracks.

Rail minister Adhir Chowdhury said it was a conspiracy. “None of the agitators were passengers. There is a political motivation behind it. Any death is sad but the vandalism that followed was done to show the Railways in a poor light,” he said.
