Woman, child found dead, husband booked

They were rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared them brought dead on arrival. The bodies were later sent for postmortem examination.

A 34-year-old mother and her minor daughter were found dead under mysterious circumstances inside their house in Ravindra Nagar, Chinsurah under Hooghly district. Police was not able to confirm the cause of death but the woman’s husband has been booked for murder. According to police sources Kanika Rai and her eight-year-old daughter Varsha were found dead inside their home when relatives broke open their door after no one responded to them knocking on their door.

They were rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared them brought dead on arrival. The bodies were later sent for postmortem examination. Kanika’s husband Prabhat Rai who is with the West Bengal police was allegedly not at home when the incident took place. Her elder daughter was staying at her sister’s at the time of the incident.

“Rai is posted in Burdwan. It is alleged that Kanika was unhappy with her husband’s behaivour towards her and their children,” said a police official. According to police sources, Kanika’s relatives alleged that Rai had come home on Thursday and left early in the morning after a heated argument with his wife. “A murder case has been lodged by Kanika’s brother against her Rai. Some poison has been recovered from the spot. But it is too early to ascertain the exact cause of the death. We are awaiting the post mortem report”, said the police source.
