A 45-year-old woman died after allegedly falling off her bed in a state-run hospital on Sunday, following which her relatives ransacked the medical ward alleging negligence.
Alam Ara Bibi, a resident of Tollygunge, was admitted in M R Bangur Hospital on Saturday with fever and breathing problems. “She and two others had to share a bed,” said one of the patient’s family member. On Sunday morning, the woman allegedly fell off her bed and was placed back on it with the help of her relatives and other patients.
“We tried to inform the doctors and nurses but no one would pay any attention to us. Even after requesting the nurses, they could not provide her with an oxygen cylinder,” said the relative.
Doctors later examined Bibi and declared her dead. Her relatives then got into an argument with the staff, after which they allegedly entered the ward and damaged hospital property. They even entered into a scuffle with the police who tried to intervene, said sources.
Bibi’s family has submitted a written complaint to the hospital authorities, who said they would investigate the matter and assured that if they find any negligence, action would be initiated against the offenders.
