THE ELECTION Commission on Monday set November 19 as the date for bypolls to two Lok Sabha constituencies — Tamluk in East Midanapore and Cooch Behar — and one Assembly constituency in Monteswar of Burdwan district.
All the three seats were being held by the ruling Trinamool Congress. Cooch Behar bypoll has been necessitated following the death of MP Renuka Sinha and Monteswar post the death of MLA Sajal Panja. The Tamluk Assembly constituency has been vacated after Suvendu Adhikari contested from Nandigram in the West Bengal polls earlier this year. He won the elections and was later inducted in the state Cabinet.
Meanwhile, soon than the election date was announced, Trinamool secretary general Partha Chatterjee said that while Dibyendu Adhikary will contest from Tamluk, Saikat Panja will be fielded from Monteswar. “We will soon announce the name of our candidate for the Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat,” he told mediapersons.
While Dibyendu is Suvendu Adhikar’s younger brother and the sitting MLA from Contai (South), and Sajal is the son of the late MLA from Monteswar.
Sources said if Dibyendu wins the bypoll, Contai (South) seat will fall vacant and former power minister Manish Gupta would be fielded from there.
