Unable to control her anger that her son had married without her consent,a mother hacked her daughter-in-law to death in Rajarhat on Friday.

For the past few years,Dipak Malik had an affair with Debanjali — both residents of Rourkela — and in spite of his family’s disapproval he married her in 2008 in a small ceremony which was attended by the members of the girl’s family. Dipak’s mother,Snehalata Malik, however never accepted the fact that her son had married against her will and she allegedly used to torture Debanjali.

“Dipak said that when he and Debanjali could no longer bear the constant nagging by his mother,he started applying for jobs outside Rourkela,” said Dipak’s friend. Three months ago,he got a job with an IT firm in Kolkata and the couple shifted to the city. Last week,Snehalata came to the city to visit the couple. “Debanjali and Snehalata would often quarrel loudly,” said a neighbour.

On Friday morning, after Dipak left for office, the two had a fight. The neighbours informed the police. “We saw Debanjali lying in a pool of blood while Snehalata was sitting beside her in a state of shock,” said a police officer. “There were several cuts on the victim’s neck and face,” said police.
