Two persons, including an elderly woman, who were injured when portions of a building collapsed on them yesterday when the Norwester had hit the city, died this morning.
The incident occurred at 164 Keshab Chandra Street under Amherst Street police station. Kalidasi Das (70) and Suraj Das (36) died early this morning at Calcutta Medical College. They lived in tiled sheds in the vicinity. When the storm hit last night,my brother was helping others to move to safety. He was helping Kalidasi to her place when a wall of this five-storeyed building fell on them, said Deepa Das,Surajs sister.
Residents said three promoters – Md Shamim,Mohan Das and Raju Dhar – who were developing the illegal structure had been told of the risk involved but they paid no heed. They had even threatened us with dire consequences if we filed a complaint, said a local.
Last Saturday,a part of the same building had fallen off and injured a resident,Soma Devi Das. Local councillor Swapna Das said she had informed Amherst Street PS immediately and asked the police to take action against offenders.
One of the builders,Mohan Das,has been arrested while the two others are absconding, said Bikas Guha,officer-in charge,Amherst Street PS.
Local residents attacked the local Borough Office and put up a demonstration at the police station.
KMC authorities said they have initiated action. We have issued an order for the demolition of the building, said Debashish Chakraborty,DG (Building II).
Asked if there were other risky buildings that they intended to bring down,he said: Our operation is on since March and we have brought down several unauthorised structures but police officials do not always cooperate with us.
He cited the example of 11/1A Topsia Road (south),Kolkata – 46 where an illegal building was being put up in spite of a court order to stop construction.
The met officials forecast for the next 24 hours is that there will be partly clouded sky with shower spells in several places. The Norwester may hit some parts of the state.
