For the first time, panchayats in the state will have 50 per cent women members in all the three tiers — panchayat, panchayat samity (commonly known as block) and zila parishad. So,the Trinamool Congress has begun the task of shortlisting prospective women candidates .

“We will not follow the Left parties where women panchayat representatives are controlled mostly by male party leaders. Women in our party are independent and they would not be influenced or controlled by our male party leaders,” said Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Chandrima Bhattacharjee, who is also the president of Trinamool’s women outfit — Trinamool Mahila Congress.

As instructed by the party, women leaders from across the districts have sent their lists mentioning details of women members. However,Bhattacharjee said she was taken aback by the prompt response from their district units.

“We had asked leaders of all the booths in panchayats to send a list of activists to us. We did not expect that the list would come within 15 days,” seh said.

Insiders in the Trinamool said apprehending trouble in selecting the “most effective” women candidate in all the seats, the party has started the process of short-listing the candidates in August this year. There are almost 52,000 seats in panchayat half of which this time will be reserved for women.

Bhattacharjee admitted that the process of selecting the effective candidates was not simple. The party, according to her,was emphasizing on nominating women with quality to govern. Though the party will finally select the candidates,“women with vast political and academic knowledge” will be given preference.
