The Trinamool Congress’s national working committee today suspended party’s Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh for his alleged anti-party activities and statements.

Party general secretary Partha Chatterjee said two other MPs — Tapas Pal and Satabdi Roy — were spared after they tendered unconditional apology to the party in writing while promising not to do or say anything in future that will cause damage to the party.

All the three MPs had recently shared stage with TMC MP Somen Mitra and his wife and MLA Sikha Mitra. The leaders had spoken against the party and described that “inner democracy” in the Trinamool Congress has eroded to a great extent in recent times and it was not the same party that it was during the Singur days”.

Kunal had gone a step ahead and said how could the Trinamool Congress leadership approve land acquisition for an airport city in Durgapur that required displacement. If Singur land acquisition was wrong,so is Durgapur airport city, said Ghosh.

Responding to the suspension order Sunday,Ghosh told the media that he had never received a show cause notice that the party had claimed was issued prior to the suspension.

“So I did not get a chance to defend my case. Anyway,I would talk to Partha Chatterjee regarding this. Mamata Banerjee continues to be my leader,” said Ghosh.

However, party spokesperson and all India general secretary Mukul Roy said Ghosh was continuously making anti-party utterances even as Tapas Paul and Satabdi Roy expressed regret and apologised for their actions.

The final action against Ghosh will be taken after the party disciplinary committee goes through the usual procedure in dealing with such cases. “Ghosh has indulged in gross indiscipline and no one is above the party’s constitution,” said Mukul Roy.

When contated,“rebel” TMC MP Somen Mitra said: “I do not believe in announcements by the Trinamool Congress,as disciplinary actions were announced against my wife Sikha Mitra as well. But she too never got the show cause letter neither did she get any official communication from the party.”
