A Trinamool Congress leader sustained a bullet injury after he was attacked Monday night at Anantapur village in South-24 Parganas district.

The incident took place at around 10 pm when Mijanur Alam, who is also a senior member of the Bhangar II Panchayat Samity, was returning home from the Polerhat Bazar area on his bike. A bike-borne assailant wearing a full mask helmet drove up beside him and shot at him twice. While one of the bullets missed, the other hit his left hand.

The TMC leader raised an alarm, following which some area locals came to his rescue, while the offender fled the scene.

Alam was initially taken to Jirangacha Primary Health Centre, and later shifted to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata. Local TMC MLA Rezzak Mollah visited him at the hospital.

Kashipur police station has initiated an investigation into the matter. Later, locals staged a demonstration at Polerhat market area, alleging police apathy.
