Confusion over the legitimacy of a Rs 10 coin amid false rumours led to a heated argument between a woman passenger and a taxi driver in New Alipore on Monday, after which the driver, instead of dropping the woman and her daughter home, drove them even further in a fit of anger till he was stopped by alert locals.

According to police sources, Mayurakshi Mitra and her daughter hailed a taxi at South City mall in Tollygunj to her residence in New Alipore. The driver, identified as Kallol Chakraborty, refused to accept a Rs 10 coin Mitra gave him. When they reached her home, the two had an argument. According to police, the driver, using filthy language, asked Mitra to get out of the taxi.

When she told him to mind his language, he allegedly drove beyond her home towards Behala through Diamond Harbour Road. Around 10 minutes later, locals managed to stop the cab. The driver was beaten up by locals and later arrested.
