State seeks HC intervention to end stalemate

The state government Monday sought Calcutta High Court’s intervention to end the ongoing indefinite bandh in the Darjeeling hills.

The state government Monday sought Calcutta High Court’s intervention to end the ongoing indefinite bandh in the Darjeeling hills. Government pleader Ashoke Banerjee Monday apprised a Division bench,headed by the Chief Justice Arun Mishra,that the government took several attempts to maintain normalcy in the hills,but the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha,led by Bimal Gurung,did not obey the HC order of August 14,which termed the bandh illegal. “They have continued with the the bandh adopting several ways including assaults,intimidation and other offences,” Banerjee said. The court later asked Banerjee to file a fresh application on the issue,which would be heard on September 5.
